4 paul breines freedom rider let freedom ride לחופש נולד As a white child with a black nanny, Paul Breines wondered why there were no white nannies for black children. As a college student, he collected money in a hat to defend four young black men arrested for sitting at a white lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. His fraternity pledge father, in an expression of anger, threw his hat to the floor and said there would be none of that n*****-loving talk. These formative moments led to Breines joining the Freedom Riders in Along with many other young people, Breines boarded southern buses to challenge the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation of black people in buses, restaurants, and schools. He was arrested and spent a month in a Mississippi prison. Breines will be discussing his experiences during the Freedom Rides, and the Jewish dimension of the early civil rights movement. Breines taught modern European Intellectual History and LGBT history at Boston College for 35 years. Publishers Weekly called his book Tough Jews: Political Fantasies and the Moral Dilemma of American Jewry a provocative, sure-to-be-controversial study, a startling rereading of Jewish history, past and present. 6 An Unrepentant Advocate משפטנית ללא חת My So-Called Enemy עם הפנים לאחר nancy gertner RETIRED Judge, U.S. District Court of Massachusetts Known as a great storyteller, Nancy Gertner has plenty of material - 23 years as a lawyer and 17 as a judge - but it s where her narrative intersected with a defendant s and a plaintiff s that made her a refuge for those seeking justice. In 1977 a humor-wielding, red-dressed Gertner made a name for herself when arguing that Susan Saxe, an anti-war activist charged with robbery and murder, should be acquitted. Twenty-one years later, a blackrobed Gertner made waves again by sentencing Alexander Leviner to a shorter term than guidelines recommended because driving-while-black lengthened his rap sheet. Gertner will be discussing her experiences as a woman in a male dominated profession, and her autobiography, An Unrepentant Advocate. Her many awards include the Thurgood Marshall Award from the ABA. Now retired from the bench, Gertner teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, and neuroscience at Harvard Law. She also speaks, consults, and litigates on the side. Many interesting questions arise when juxtaposing the lives of people suffering from the impact of war from opposing sides. As long as the war goes on, how can they see each other as anything but the enemy? As long as they see each other as the enemy, how can the war do anything but go on? In July 2002, a group of Palestinian, Jewish Israeli, and Arab Israeli teenagers participated in a 10-day women s leadership program in the U.S. called Building Bridges for Peace. Filmed over a seven-year period, My So-Called Enemy, directed by Gossels, follows the lives of six of these young women, and shows how the experience transformed them. Gossels will show a four-minute work sample from the movie and discuss the story around it: how she came to the project, what impact she hopes to achieve with it, and how it is encouraging dialogue in the Jewish community - and beyond. She will also be talking about her filmmaking process. Gossels is an Emmy Award-winning documentarian whose films, The Children of Chabannes and My So-Called Enemy, have garnered twenty awards on the festival circuit. The boys soaked up jazz, Motown, and so much more. The music got inside our brains and our bodies, Bo Winiker told The Boston Globe. The boys watched their father bring music to life - and were hooked. For 51 years, Winiker has been making music everywhere, from weddings to Presidential Inaugurations. His bio reads like a jazz lover s dream come true; he has played for presidents, made music with stars like Billy Joel and Aretha Franklin, and was part of the Grammy winning New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble. Come hear Winiker talk about 51 amazing years of music, and how a father s passion became his son s lifelong enterprise. They have two boys at JCDS, one in kindergarten and one in third grade. muhammad zaman associate chair for undergraduate studies, associate professor of biomeidcal engineering, boston university How can we save over a million children under five from dying of pneumonia every year? One thing we need is basic diagnostic tools that are portable, durable, reliable, and cheap, like Professor Muhammad Zaman s Zambia-ready pulse oximeter. In addition to the oximeter, Zaman s pioneering work in developing low cost diagnostics for testing sub-standard and counterfeit drugs in poor countries earned him Saving Lives at Birth Grand Challenge Award, which is a joint consortium between USAID, Gates Foundation, UK Aid, Grand Challenges Canada, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Norway. Zaman is a biomedical engineering professor at Boston University. Bostonia magazine describes him as having a rare set of gifts: technical skill, verbal eloquence, irrepressible enthusiasm, and an innate understanding of the developing world. His inventions are being implemented in many African countries including Zambia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Dr. Zaman stands out in his constant re-engineering of his teaching, The New York Times wrote, and he is also involved with numerous efforts to improve engineering education in Africa and Asia, including his native Pakistan. ענין של טעם Matters of Taste Page 20 ענין של טעם Matters of Taste Page 21

13 Leftovers with love לקט ופאה באהבה BOARD OF TRUSTEES חבר הנאמנים ASHLEY STANLEY FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF LOVIN SPOONFULS Did you know that roughly 40% of all of the available food in the United States is wasted each year? If just 5% of that wasted food could be salvaged, we could completely eradicate hunger nationally. So, what s the problem? While this food is available, the true challenge is connecting this surplus with those who are hungry. While dining out at a restaurant in Greater Boston, Ashley Stanley was astounded by the amount of leftover food on the table. It was that experience that inspired her, in 2010, to launch Lovin Spoonfuls to bridge the gap between food resources and the people who need them. Since its inception, Lovin Spoonfuls has distributed 150,000 pounds of fresh, healthy food, and has raised awareness for food rescue in a crusade to end hunger in Massachusetts. sandy & DAVID TALL Sandy and David met at a Sukkot party after Sandy came from Jacksonville, Florida to Massachusetts looking for a job. Sandy and David have three kids, one JCDS alumna, and two current JCDS students (in sixth and seventh grade). Sandy is a CPA with a small accounting firm in Fitchburg, and David runs the family s plastic manufacturing company. The Talls enjoy watching Florida football after shul on Saturday afternoons, and Patriot/Jaguar football on Sundays.
